The OU won the prestigious Queen´s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education, with its ground-breaking Teacher Education in Sub-Saharan Africa programme (TESSA).
The Queen´s Anniversary Prizes are awarded for exceptional contributions by institutions in the higher and further education sectors to the wider community. TESSA extends across 13 institutions and nine African countries, and is now Africa’s largest teacher education research and development community. TESSA was designed and led by The Open University and funded by the Department for Education and Skills in England, The Allan and Nesta Ferguson Charitable Trust, The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and donations from OU alumni. It has developed a unique open content model to address the challenges of delivering high quality programmes of school-based professional learning for teachers in Africa.
HEAT is another programme launched in early 2011 by The Open University with a bold ambition – to reach and help train 250,000 frontline healthcare workers across sub-Saharan Africa by 2016. By working in close collaboration with African Governments, NGOs and funding institutions, we believe that HEAT will transform access to healthcare in the region.
